During a Gridlife track day at the Ohio course, one of three such events held across the Midwest each year, the weather didn’t cooperate; a downpour made some of the more serious, record-seeking drivers hesitant to hit the tarmac.
The solution? Invent a wet lap record. “We’re in a unique position where we can make adjustments like that because we’re right on the edge of ‘pro’ and ‘fun.’ If we became a completely pro event, the ability to do an audible like that decreases; it becomes something people get upset about. The wet lap times—they’re still not official in any capacity, but we are tracking them—was more about ‘let’s see what we can all do in the wet! Let’s make lemonade!’”
