good news on the bridges and roadkill issue, in the Amazon, "Zero roadkill as Amazon canopy bridges secure 15,000 crossings"
Project Reconecta installed eight rope bridges in a municipality in Brazil, and a 15-month study used camera traps to document thousands of arboreal wildlife adapting to new aerial crossings.
Reconecta’s creator, biologist Fernanda Abra, a National Geographic Explorer and winner of the Whitley Award, is now expanding these low-cost conservation tools to other Brazilian biomes and neighboring Suriname.
Brazil’s federal transport department has officially designated the rope bridge design as the recommended national standard for highways to curb the millions of wildlife deaths recorded on roads annually.
The Gordie Howe International Bridge officially opened to vehicle traffic this week, the event was led by the Governor of Michigan driving a Mustang ( built in Michigan, engine assembled in Canada)
Named after the legendary Canadian-born Detroit Red Wings hockey player Gordie Howe, it's the first new international border crossing between Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario, in over 60 years.

Today, let's remember that a bridge was measured in Smoots!
In 1958, as a freshman at MIT and Lambda Chi Alpha pledge, the fraternity pledgemaster hatched the idea to use the shortest — and most scientifically named pledge — to measure the bridge from Boston to Cambridge.
Little did they know, however, that their activity would make its way into MIT, Boston and even Google lore.
They also underestimated how difficult getting up and down 364.4 times (plus or minus an ear) would be. "I don't think any of us had the slightest idea how much work was involved with lying down, getting up," he said. "They had to help me a great way across the bridge. I started by doing a push-up, and then I couldn't even do that. It deteriorated from there."
In 1958, a group of MIT students measured the Massachusetts Ave. Bridge in “smoots,” a now accepted unit of measurement named for the 5-foot, 7-inch Oliver R. Smoot Jr. ’62, who famously laid down hundreds of times across the span one storied night as his peers painted markers across the bridge, totaling 364.4 smoots
On April 4, an MIT team set out on a similar journey across the Charles River to pull off a new “hack,” this time measuring the Longfellow Bridge in “kleins.” This new measurement is named after Smoot’s classmate Martin Klein ’62. One klein (4 feet, 9.5 inches) is equal to 0.85820896 smoots.
The expedition was undertaken in honor of both Smoot and the 85th birthday of Klein.
Known as the father of commercial side-scan sonar, Klein serves on the MIT Sea Grant Advisory Board and the MIT Museum Collections Committee. His sonar technology has been used worldwide to help locate countless famous shipwrecks, including the Titanic, the World War I ocean liner RMS Lusitania, and the treasure-laden Nuestra Señora de Atocha.
Appropriately, the MIT team used a “side-scan” method to survey the Longfellow Bridge.
Reclined on a custom-engineered wooden cart topped with a mission-specific chaise lounge pillow, Klein himself acted as the official observation device — by looking to the sides — as the team pulled him along the bridge.

the Northern Pacific train wreck on the "S" trestle 7 miles above Mullan, Idaho, on February 10, 1903.
An avalanche had taken out a sizable section of the trestle just hours after the train with a rotary snow plow stopped partly on the trestle so the crew could rest. Ironically, they had stopped on the end of the trestle to avoid the train being buried in an avalanche. A helper locomotive with tender and a caboose on the back of the train on the trestle were hurled over 75 feet into the gulch below, while a passenger car hung precariously over the chasm. Amazingly, nobody was killed. The injured NP personnel were hauled to the hospital in Wallace by hand sleigh. NP engine no. 396, a Baldwin manufactured E-Class 4-6-0, it's tender, and the caboose were a total loss.

Now that the new 1,285-foot-long, 180-foot-tall Yellowstone Bridge is finished, demolition crews are dismantling the 65-year-old bridge that stood in its place, near the Northeast Entrance
Removing the old Yellowstone River Bridge was always part of the project. The 1963 bridge served its purpose but had reached the end of its lifespan and needed to be replaced.

Bridges might get monitored for degradation and deformation by satellite monitoring, and if the claims of millimeter movements being measured are accurate, you can bet Big Brother of any country with a satellite, or a good hacker of info, can read the date off a dime in the dirt in your backyard
In a study of 744 bridges across the globe, an international team found that by combining radar and satellite imaging into risk calculations, engineers can identify which bridges are at risk of structural damage long before such damage occurs.
The researchers revealed it can complement traditional inspections by detecting millimeter-scale displacement on the structure caused by all the vagaries of time, decay, and nature. Such a solution could change how infrastructure is protected worldwide: monitoring bridge stability from space to detect problems before they become disasters.
“For bridges specifically, MT-InSAR allows for more frequent deformation measurements across the entire infrastructure network, unlike traditional inspections, which typically occur only a few times per year and require personnel on the ground.”
They also revealed that the structures in North America are in the poorest condition, followed by those in Africa. While North American bridges are in poorer shape due to most being built in the 1960s, they still benefit from visual inspections by trained professionals.

when it comes to bridges, what is more unusual and rare, then a cast iron private one, over a public street, in a major city? Oh, and it's got a 3 car garage. Except no one wants to live there, everyone only wants to flip it
The 118-year-old bridge, which picturesquely hovers above a cobblestone street that was a private access lane to the horse stables of wealthy Hudson Street residents in the early 1800s, connects a landmarked four-story mansion with a private 1,200-square-foot rooftop terrace to a loft across the street.
The landmarked property also features a private three-car garage — and more than 4,000 square feet of air rights.
the 1907 townhouse on the west side of the bridge – 9 Jay – was originally the carriage house for the building on the east side of it – 67 Hudson – which, when it was built in 1900, was a branch of the New York Hospital.
Ambulances pulled into the Jay Street building and patients were taken upstairs and across the bridge to the hospital.
The previous owners (billionaire real estate types) bought it in 2022 for $20 million and figured someone else will pay more if this gets better publicity, so they've listed it for a 10 million dollar mark up at $29.95M.
Before that, it languished on the market for years. It was first listed in 2015 by an American fashion designer from the ‘90s who bought 9 Jay (which came with the bridge) in 1985 for $499,000, in a bidding war with Andy Warhol.
He then bought 3A and 3B at 67 Hudson for $300,000, combining those two apartments and completing the connection to the townhouse.
The hospital put up the three-story structure across Staple Street and linked the two buildings with the cast iron bridge.

When a Wyoming crumbling bridge was failing, engineers turned to the Bailey Bridge concept invented during WW II to replace nearly half the state’s bridges which are past their prime.
this modular bridge that was recently put up, is a direct descendant of one of World War II's most consequential engineering innovations: the Bailey Bridge.
"Like an Erector Set, it comes totally broken down to the site, and then it's assembled at the site by the contractors,” Sobecki said. “The whole thing is built on the premise (that) it’s pre-fabricated, made in the shop. Then the pieces ship out and you just bolt it and pin it together at the job site and launch it.
“You don't need heavy cranes. You don't need welders out there. It's designed to be built with a minimum amount of equipment."
The German practice of destroying bridges in Sicily and Italy was so thorough that the U.S and British armies built more than 3,000 Bailey bridges with a combined length of nearly 55 miles, at an average length of 100 feet, according to the Warfare History Network.
According to the American Road and Transportation Builders Association's (ARTBA) analysis of federal data, 204 of Wyoming’s 3,136 bridges — 6.5% — are classified as structurally deficient, meaning at least one key element is in poor condition.
The American Society of Civil Engineers' 2025 Infrastructure Report Card paints a more concerning picture of aging infrastructure.
The ARTBA reports that 945 of South Dakota's 5,883 bridges — 16.1% — are structurally deficient, one of the highest rates in the nation and more than double Wyoming's percentage.
Nebraska struggles with sheer volume. With 15,398 bridges — nearly five times Wyoming's inventory — the state has 1,217 structurally deficient structures, or 7.9%.
Increasingly extreme weather is driving demand for emergency bridging solutions. "Whether you believe in climate change or not, there is a bigger propensity of flooding and hurricanes and all that stuff, and it does drive our business," he said.
