E-ZPass transponders are phasing out. The same function can be served by a sticker, for millions of dollars less every year
Massachusetts state transportation officials have confirmed they are transitioning away from traditional hard-case E-ZPass transponders and replacing them with low-cost windshield sticker tags — a move expected to save millions of dollars annually.
And probably increase their sales income since the E-Z Pass was supplied with a 'Velcro' like attachment, basically encouraging you to use one transponder for multiple cars. I expect the new RFID tag sticker will still work if thoughtful customers attach it to a removeable surface rather than directly to the windshield but I wonder how many drivers will think to do this.
ReplyDeletelol, I had seen or posted something about that idea of making a way to get your windshield stickers transferrable... I think it was to laminate it, and then elmers glue to stick the laminated item to whatever windshield you wanted it on, and cut it loose easily to move it, or maybe it was use saran wrap across the back. It was years ago, I can't recall
DeleteWhen I was in college, I would stretch saran wrap across a bowl, and stick the window parking pass to the saran wrap. Then cut around the sticker, and it would static cling to the windshield. Now, the same college uses license plates for parking registration. You can go online and change the information if you want to park a different car, but if you don't have a front plate, you can't back into a parking spot.
Deletethat thing about front license plates affects a lot of people... enough states are one plate only, and military keep the plates from their home state until they switch from active duty to civilian... and a lot of expensive cars don't put a front license plate holder on the cars.
Deletegreat saran wrap trick!
DeleteI was just in Florida, and they scan license plates or E-Z passes for their turnpike. I wasn't sure how that would work in a rental car, so I took my Ohio E-Z pass, but I forgot to get it out when we left the airport, until we stopped to get lunch. I got a charge from the rental company for the first toll plus a $4.95 per day service charge.
ReplyDeleteIt would have been interesting to learn if the Ohio E-Z pass would get recognized... but the rental car company will have their pound of flesh
