I hope if that drunk driver got drunk in a bar or club, the bartender gets sued, and the place loses it's liquor license. Why the hell can't drunks get a damn Uber, Taxi, or designated driver (bars and clubs ought to hire a couple to prevent drunks from driving)
Folly Beach is an incredibly pleasant place to visit for a couple of days. It's an old beach town that welcomes visitors with some nice restaurants, a couple of bars and of course a huge as all hell beach. But - like everyplace else worth visiting, it's usually the visitors that ruin a good thing.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to take the opposite tack here. Why do local authorities think they're smarter than the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration and just arbitrarily decide that golf carts and ATV's with NO safety equipment are okay to drive on public roadways? Often carrying multiple passengers including some doddering old fogey's innocent grandchildren. I ride a motorcycle - I make my own decisions - but I don't pretend it's completely harmless.

DeleteAlso, a golf car is exactly how much safer than a model T? They have exactly the same amount of safety equipement... no, I'm wrong, there, a golf cart is safer, as the model T steering wheel has been known to be dangerous to the driver, for about 90 years.
Since you and I agree a Model T is legal on all roads in most countries around the world, there's your answer.
Or, a curved dash Oldsmobile. Been legal on roads for about 120 years.
Probably not as safe as the golf cart, due to people being able to be knocked OUT of it easier than out of a golf cart, higher center of gravity, etc.
So, golf carts... lower center of gravity, safer on cornering, more reliable and less likely to break down than cars that you haven't considered are legal, and driven all over, because you think of them differently, if at all.
Same goes for ATVs.
So, what do you think, did I answer your question?
And when it comes to public roads, a ten speed is legal to use on the paved part of the road, and that's sure as hell not as safe to be on as the golf cart.
As for your comment about pretending that something is harmless, well, that's your comment, and wasn't said by anyone involved in this event... so, you're projecting emotions and motivations that aren't evidenced by the facts on the scene.
So, since you raise the question about why anyone (in your comment, local authorities) think they are smarter - why do you give yourself a pass in the same comment, with the catchet that you get to make your own decisions?
I'm not busting your balls, just pointing out the inconsistency in your comment, and what I figure you've overlooked.

Roads are risky to be on, because people suck, and things move on them with momentum, possibly with drunks not really directing them for shit - but mostly because cars weigh over half a ton, and human bodies aren't bouncy. Force equals mass times acceleration. I learned that about 3 decades ago
This sort of thing is why I have turned down 2 offers to be a partner in a bar.
