  1. Of note: Alexander Winton arrived a day before this race. When he saw that Henry Ford's steering gear had six turns lock-to-lock, he called his factory and had a Winton steering gear freighted overnight by train. He gave it to Henry Ford. Once installed, the Ford handled much better and Henry went on to win the race.

    1. thank you! THAT sort of knowledge is car guy 101 stuff! I love it! The history that there was a race, well, historians get a kick out of it. But that one guy looked at the mechanical apparatus, saw how easy it could be improved, and made that happen, for his competitor? That's genuine sportsmanship, and car guy persona!
