Kentucky's Big Dig brings construction equipment out for kids to get familiar with at the Boone County Fairgrounds under the supervision of trained operators from local construction companies
Operable machinery included mid-size and mini-excavators, Morooka crawler-carrier, D6 bulldozer, cement mixers and skid steers.
When I was about 5, the town paved the dirt road in front of our house. There was a backhoe digging out the ditch, and as I watched, rapt, the operator called me over, and sat me in the cab and let me operate the controls briefly. A little spontaneous gesture that remains one of those magical moments these 70 years later. I got a backhoe many years later and let my kids do it too.
Great idea.
