Seems like it would be the other way around. With the red being railroad travel in a given time frame and the gray being the distance of air travel in the same time.
maybe you're misinterpreting the red, which is a USA at one third scale of the gray, indicating the planes thake and accomplish the same travel on one third the time, also shows how the map is shrinking with a relative time between airplane travel time to reach the destinations to how long it takes a train. Shrinking
