I don't know how it made any sense to put a 4 mpg bus into service as an ambulance, it's too big to drive easy to help anyone

  1. Although not as common back in the day as they are now, mass casualty events. You could transport more than one patient at a time to the hospital in bus. Who thought about MPG then?

  2. Or maybe it's more of a mobile ER, drive to large accident with multiple involved and provide on place help with stabilizing patients before sending them to hospitals in smaller ambulances?

  3. There used to be two schools of thought when it came to ambulances. One was lets get there with as much equipment as possible treat the patient in place. Once the patient was stabilized/safe they would transport him/her to the hospital. The other school of thought is more along the lines of lets get there as fast as possible pick up every piece of the poor soul that had an accident and race back to the hospital as fast as possible again. The thought is that hospitals are better equipped than the best ambulance (not just gear but also doctors)

Today most ambulance systems favor speed in and out over treatment at the accident site. This bus may be from the time in which ambulances wanted to be more like small hospitals.
