Around that time a place I worked bought one of these new and I drove it a few times for longish distances. My recollection is that the ride and handling were not so up to date, and the body was kind of sloppy and rattly, but it had a very punchy engine, which unlike some of its contemporaries in the early age of emission control on carbureted engines, was pretty driveable. AMC never seemed to get the whole thing right, but someone in their engine department was on the ball.
i don't think my Chery will ever get to anything close to that even after 50 years.
ReplyDeletePut a lot of miles on these and the Ambos were seriously nice drivers.
