Back in 2003, this Ferrari F50 was stolen in Italy soon after it was purchased. The fair market value for this 1996 F50 – one of just 349 F50s built – is $1.94 million
Fast forward a bunch of years, and this car was intercepted at the Canadian border by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. They notice something a little fishy about the VIN plate rivets, and after investigating further—and contacting Ferrari—CBP with help from NCIB determines this is the F50 stolen from a hotel parking garage in Imola, Italy. The insurance company did not cover the loss.
Information from Ferrari showed the car was stolen barely more than a month after Paolo Provenzi bought it with family members.
"When this is over, there’s going to be a movie made about this," Piras said. "This car has been going around the world, apparently. It was in Japan for a while."
The issue is, in the intervening years the Ferrari has had at least a couple of owners, the last of which claims to have proper ownership. While it seems the evidence is compelling, the Buffalo News relates the U.S. Attorney isn't sure if it should give the car back to either claimant. It wants these parties—or you, provided you have a stronger claim than the folks identified in the news report—to sort it out in court. Until then, the government is going to hold onto it , as they've been doing since December 2019.
Two people claim ownership: the man car was stolen from in 2003 and a Florida man who purchased it online for $1.435 million in September 2019 for his rare automobile collection.
The car ended up parked in Buffalo after U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers inspected it at the Peace Bridge. It was being transported on a commercial carrier to Mohammed Alsaloussi of Miami, Fla., according to a court record.
The car with 10,708 miles on it had an Alberta, Canada, license plate that was registered to Ikonick Collection Ltd., in Edmonton.
