I first saw someone use these 35 years ago, and it's rare to see them at all, but when finding these on a truck I was reminded that I've never talked to anyone that could explain why 99.999999% of cars made don't seem to need them. So, why does ANY vehicle need them? Aren't they a waste of money?
Unless you were in a sandstorm and were concerned about a small amount of voltage that could build up on the exterior surface of the vehicle, yes, grounding straps are stupid.
ReplyDeleteDo you suppose static straps are coming back? Shades of J. C. Whitney/Warshawski's!
ReplyDeleteI do not think so... but they are sold by Napa, I included the link.
DeleteYes and no, because sometimes they do work. If a person who is prone to car sickness is told that the strip prevent static electricity to build up (that's how they were marketed in Denmark), and thus prevents people from being carsick, it does actually work. Providing the person believes the hype, of course.
ReplyDeletePersonally I'm a great fan of the Placebo Effect, and even have something similar work for me: Chinese food tastes better when eaten with chopsticks than with knife and fork. But then I know it's all in my head.
I'm always receiving those little static shocks getting in and out of my mini van,
ReplyDeleteit was worse when I had my aluminum bodied Rover......I'd stick one on just to see
if this would stop as an experiment. Years ago a friend had then on his car, said it
helped the kids from getting car sick, this was in the 80's.
Most gasoline tanker trucks have them.
ReplyDeleteI dont see a need for them on a regular car though.
Only if you're prone to getting struck by lightening, or transport nitroglycerin.
ReplyDeleteActually saw a car in Watertown NY with a set a couple of weeks ago. I was blown away. I didn't know they still existed......and why
ReplyDeleteWell... That was a couple of years back, but the company I used to work for had an LT series VW van. For a reason or other it built up static so badly, it was always shocked our driver guy. He installed such stuff and it worked.
