Notice the above air dam, duck tail spoiler across the entire tail panel top. It was sky blue and the seat covers were Austrian ski sweaters. How do I know? None other than Hunter S Thompson was there and wrote about it in his book The Great Shark Hunt: Strange Tales from a Strange Time, and he seems to have been assigned to them for a publicity tour
"The Temptations of Jean-Claude Killy" is an article published in the premiere issue of Scanlan's Monthly in March 1970, written by Hunter S. Thompson.
I'd never heard of the JC Killy Z/28, so I looked it up (Linda sent me this photo where she's leaning against it...) and I think that is the Chevrolet Sports Department patch on the sweater by the tail light https://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2018/05/1st-ive-heard-of-chevrolet-sports.html
notice the license plates of the above Camaros... but the cars are a Z/28 and an SS.
Jean-Claude Killy was a triple gold medalist at the Grenoble Olympics in 1968, Chevrolet Sports Department celeb, and life-long Rolex Ambassador, and the organizer, twenty-four years later, of the Winter Olympics of Albertville France in 1992. Killy is the first champion in the history of sport to stage the Olympic Games. (thanks Astericx!)
The upper left ad ran only once in 1969, in Ski and Skiing magazine. https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/chevrolet-1969-camaro-28-jean-claude-1735707641 and was made by the Campbell Ewald agency, Chevrolets ad agency for decades

That's a great picture of the 'Killy Z-28'. Would you ask Linda if she remembers the stripe color? My guess is Red :)
ReplyDeleteThere are two other pictures of this car in Michael Lamm's book "The Great Camaro". It has snow tires, chrome rally rims without trim rings, quad tail pipes, and lacks rear bumper guards.
Thanks for sharing!
