That's interesting that at one time, and that was nearly a hundred years ago, there were more varieties than we currently have available for purchase, as steam certainly isn't being produced and sold at car dealerships.
I'm guessing planetary is an automatic, friction is a manual transmission with a clutch, and that leads me to think that the certification process of the 20s was interested in knowing that drivers could operate a variety of transmissions, or vehicles without transmissions.
