there are a few unsung heroes that history may let fade away from history books, but they'll outlast us all among the stories told at race tracks...

  1. That looks like Smoky's '66 Chevelle, the car that forced NASCAR to start using body templates. See Smoky's Wikipedia page.

    1. No, I do believe I've covered the Chevelle and Smokey better and more thoroughly than Wikipedia ever will, but thanks for the lack of your vote of confidence and misplaced respect for another source of information far less amazing than my own and coming here to rub my nose in your preferences. You can be a rel dick sometimes, and I knew that when you started commenting, but we've been on great terms and discourse for a couple of years now... how about we go back to where you don't disrespect me on my comments section, though obviously unintentionally, I do believe now that I have pointed it out you can see it from my perspective

  2. Jesse, as I recall Smokey stated years later the 66 Chevelle was not scaled down as rumored. Can't remember but seems be did slick it up a bit but nothing earth shattering. My shop neighbors Reher & Morrison the Arlington, TX engine builders squired a pair of Smokey's race cylinder hesds. After studying them and putting them on the flow bench David just grinned and said that old man will take secrets to his grave that will never be figui out. Knowing The R-M boys that is a huge statement to Smokey's knowledge. Not sure but I think I read about the rumored ChrvelCh size in his biography and I think I have a copy in my library. Thanks for all the great interest and photos that you share.l

    1. It wasn't scaled down, it was aero'd for racing though... and I've already posted a great feature on it... https://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2015/05/what-was-real-deal-on-smokeys-chevelle.html for a graphic comparison, and https://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2016/09/we-all-know-story-of-smokeys-chevelle.html showing it passed the template test. Well, the first one anyway, no doubt they hadn't realized they needed more templates to catch the cheating, but screw um, they didn't make rules against stuff yet, and I love how he exploited their ignorance. Like the fender skirts... did you read that one? https://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2006/12/new-smokey-story.html and in 2010 the car was for sale at auction https://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2010/01/smokeys-chevelle-is-for-sale-you-know.html
