Created by Jidéhem in 1957, the little Starter character entertained and informed the readers of the Journal de Spirou, the advantages and the disadvantages of the cars of the time, both technically and of aesthetically. Jean De Maesmaker used his initials (JDM) to create his pseudonym Jidéhem.
In the 1960s, Starter was a weekly feature, covering the latest innovations in the automotive industry, sometimes uncompromising, often enthusiastically compared and commented of his love of beautiful mechanics, and the latest news in the automotive industry with both children and adults.

André Franquin, the star of the newspaper Journal de Spirou, entrusted Jidéhem with Chronicles of Starter, an feature that Jidéhem performed solo for decades.
Franquin also entrusted him with Gaston. A series of which he will be practically the co-author of 1957 to 1968, and the two men sharing pencil and inking without real distinction until 1968, when Franquin abandoned other projects (Spirou and Fantasio) and devoted himself entirely to Gaston.
