My grandfather was a Paterson, NJ fireman for 48 years (longest active tour in the city's history as far as I know). At the end of his career he was the Chief's driver. Back in the early 1950's he'd bring the "gig" back to the house when he had a dinner break. I got to sound the siren. It was a hoot!
Wow, 48 years, that is an incredible long run at one career! No one entering the job market now will ever see 48 years with one company. You had a cool grand dad, to bring the engine home and let you experience the siren!
