Jim has owned his ‘64 Comet for going on 6 decades (since 66)

the engine is a Boss 302, built with the best parts Ross Racing Engines in Ohio, with a 4 speed, a Winters 9" rear, Baer Brakes, strut front suspension, and the hood? Is TERRIFIC, and made from pulling a mold from one of the 21 original A/FX Comets (Chrisman's was one of the 21) and fabricated his hood from that... and he still owns the mold! Awesome! The wheels are American Rebel

1975

Thank you Jim! I love your Comet!

the 94 Mercury Sable AIV (Aluminum-Intensive Vehicle) was about 400 pounds lighter than a Taurus SHO, with the same power train, and without rust

The AIV Sable went all-in on aluminum, reinventing the unibody. Most of its steel body panels were replaced with aluminum, and many suspension components followed suit.

Multimatic Motorsports (Ford's exclusive racing partner) entered an aluminum-bodied Sable AIV in the 1995 One Lap of America endurance event, and finished first in class (Mid-Price class) and 15th overall, ahead of far more exotic machinery, like the Cobra Mustangs, Corvette ZR-1s, and even RUF Porsches. The win validated the platform’s stiffness, reliability, and real-world performance advantages.

FWIW,  I beat Ford Authority to the post with this... I wonder, are they looking at my blog? Because it's too coincidental to think that Ford Authority chose today to look at the facebook page that I looked at, which posted this on Feb 9th 2026, the day after I did

old men running Mercury tried to get some attention by using kids slang and pop culture art, from what I'm reading, mostly to promote the Cyclone, by sending a JOIN! The Mercury Competition Team pack out to new Cyclone owners

It's a constant source of enjoyment to me to learn about cool late 60s stuff, like this rare Cyclone GT 500 sales promotion - The Atlanta 500 Driveaway Program, part of the NASCAR race track promotional programs Mercury ran back in 1968 and 1969.

the Atlanta sales region dealers offered a 1968 Mercury Cyclone GT 500 in either Wimbledon White or Calypso Coral with special badges.

If you purchased one of these specials you received two tickets to the Atlanta 500 on March 31, 1968, a Mercury race jacket and hat. The selling dealer drove the lucky buyers to the track where they would take delivery of their new car. There were 160 GT 500s delivered that day!

Once at the track the new owners were treated to breakfast and photo opps with Cale, Lee Roy and Tiny Lund. The new owners took delivery on the track in front of the 80,000 race fans and then took two laps around the Atlanta race track with Cale Yarborough leading them!

The Cougar GT 500 was taken to the NASCAR Charlotte 600 race on Memorial Day weekend in 1968.
