  1. I have no evidence but I've always assumed these 'ads' were written by the advertising and editorial team and presented to the various racing teams for approval. All to drum up interest and sell newspapers. Similar to 'click-bait' today.

    2. that reminds me, there have been a lot of fake adversaries in sports simply to team up to make MORE MONEY. Snake and Mongoose, best example. Just publicity machines to drum up income. I would guess the "cam wars" were similar in the magazines, simply seeing that it was getting readers excited to participate in a fandom, like the Isky t-shirts. Whether anyone ever threw away a cam and replaced it with a different brand, I suspect didn't happen often. A new cam purchase for a new engine build sure, but tear out a cam to replace it based on advertised wins? Ya gotta be rich and desperate to try something new because someone paid to advertise how great their product is, versus seeing a non-partial 3rd party comparison test. And Hot Rod magazine probably gave their advertisers a lot of grace in testing.
