fascinating design of the cranes on the piers, for unloading bananas and transferring them to boxcars.... anyone that has been in a Navy shipyard is used to bare skeleton cranes, so to me, these are some deluxe cranes

    I'm guessing the crane is of wooden construction, and the enclosure is to protect it from the elements. Same reason covered bridges are covered.
