a lot of logging machinery was abandoned on coastal Alaskan islands, here is one very obviously Sherman based tractor that has been rescued from rusting away completely

  1. My X and I drove to Alaska the summer of 1990, and ended up in Fairbanks on a Saturday. Sunday morning we hit the deck early and headed for the Arctic Circle. About half way there we came across a “resort” that once had been a gold mine. There was a sign advertising a Sunday brunch so we stopped. The owner told us the mine had closed in the fifties one day and everyone just left, leaving everything behind. That “everything” included perhaps a dozen large earth moving machines...dozers, graders, etc.

I wondered out loud why the machinery wasn't sold for scrap. Turns out it would have cost more to retrieve it than it was worth in scrap. So there it was. Most likely it’s still there.

Looks like the critter in the post is aboard one of the ferries servicing residents and vehicles along the coast.
