In regards to the beer can on the A pillar, back in the day they had checkpoints throughout the race. As each vehicle went through a checkpoint, a person would put a piece of paper with that checkpoint information in the beer can. At the end of the race, all checkpoint tabs were collected to make sure each entrant went through each checkpoint.
