The gravestone of George S. Bangs, located in Rosehill Cemetery, Chicago is a US Postal Service train entering it's final tunnel
Bangs is credited with the "Fast Mail" trains, which were specially designed trains consisting of only mail cars with expedited schedules designed to accommodate the needs of the Post Office rather than the needs of the traveling public.
What a beautiful tribute and piece of art work to Mr. Bangs. He must have left a hell of an impression on the USPS. But notice the rear wheel of the truck. It looks like it is derailed. But then I see the rail is not quite right ether. Maybe damage over the years?
someone out there might know, or, the last people who knew are dead already of old age. It's another example of things I wish people would write down in history books. Probably the cemetery maintenance people know.
It does look like a derail. Maybe it was intentional as the gentleman had died. Even the yellow lichen on the stone adds to the appearance of the stone.
