it probably took more than this one block and tackle to get this locomotive back upright

the block and tackle was invented by Archimedes around 250 BC

A block is a set of pulleys on an axle in a housing. When rope is run through a block or a series of blocks, the whole assembly is called a tackle.

That Archimedes was brilliant, no doubt a genius, and invent a couple things the human race is still using, some 2200ish years later when probably less than a 1/3rd of the population knows of the inventor.

He was so smart, he figured out the area of a circle; the surface area and volume of a sphere; and derived an accurate approximation of pi; defined and investigating the spiral that now bears his name,  and was also one of the first to apply mathematics to physical phenomena, founding hydrostatics and statics, including an explanation of the principle of the lever.

He is credited with designing innovative machines, such as his screw pump, compound pulleys, and defensive war machines to protect his native Syracuse from invasion.

All that, without pencils, calculators, or even a math teacher.

  1. Thanks for the history. I knew of some of his accomplishments, but not all that you have named.
