here's another reason to be careful when biking in the car's blind spot... they turn when you really can't do a thing to escape injury of some kind

don't ride, or drive, in someone's blind spot... it's stupid, as this guy demonstrates, and really.... you're not in so much of a hurry that you MUST ride in their blind spot, let up a little and get more distance between you and them. You've live longer.

  1. As a former road cyclist (former because I got hit by a car and it was the driver's fault and it nearly killed me) I have great sympathy for cyclists, but note first of all that that cyclist did a heck of a good save, and that it's lucky because the crash really appears to be his own fault. It looks as if he was about to pass on the right, which, had he thought about it, would mean the car was slowing down for something, which should have told him something. It's a little hard to tell in the gif shown, but I'm pretty sure the car was signaling, which he'd have seen if he'd been riding more carefully. Even if he was not planning an illegal right pass, he was just too close.

On roads where there's a cycling lane marked out, it is indeed the car's responsibility to check the blind spot, because in the bike lane one can ride at any speed, even if it means passing cars on the right. Not the case here.

  2. As an active cyclist (10K miles last year), I sympathize with the rider; however,

    1. he was "on the drops" -- wrong, as it took him valuable time to brake
    2. he panic braked with more application to the front, causing the endo
    3. he placed himself in a dangerous position
    4. he should have anticipated that the car might turn into him.

I know from experience that this situation can be alleviated. I face it (and more) everyday, on the road.

  3. I think the car was trying to pass the bike and cut him off to make the turn. Either the driver didn't see the bike, or thought he could make the turn in time. The bike doesn't look like it's going fast enough to keep up with or pass the car on the right.
