Due to the Electricians strike the gas pumps at White Service Station, Essex, England, were out of action until they innovated a bicycle to fuel pump, for manual pumping. The garage offered quadruple stamps for anyone wishing to pedal themselves. December 1970
Looks like an Anglia, Mk1 Escort and in the background I think its either a mk4 Zephyr or Zodiac.
ReplyDeleteThe Electrical Trades Union after WW2 was heavily infiltrated (among other unions) by communists with the intention of disrupting British society and industry. I remember a long series of strikes through to the 80s, doing much to support Margaret Thatcher's popularity.
ReplyDeleteThe '59 film 'I'm Alright Jack' gives a good idea of the polarised attitudes of the time. It's also an excellent, though bittersweet comedy.
I could only find a trailer on Youtube.
