In my younger, dumber and much poorer days, I drove a rusted out '78 Cordoba that had a couple cheap dollar store brand C-Clamps holding the exhaust flanges together. I was so proud of my creative & affordable solution. That car ended up in wrecked and in the scrap yard maybe 2 years later with those C-Clamps still holding it together.
I see that as solving the problem without having to pay someone to weld it. Unless the car is going to be inspected, raced, or sold as perfect and original, there's no argument from me about any simple fix that keeps it working, on the road as needed, and doesn't have a safety potential issue like brake lines, fuel system, or electrical. Exhaust fix? Never going to be an issue.
I disagree, as if this example permanently fixes the problem, what can your comp;laint be? It's FIXED. It's not unsafe in any way I can think of, as its a metal flange to metal flange airtight seal... and the vise grips can't fall off if this, in your own word "permanent" fix remains in place. I await your reply
"If it works, it ain't stupid." Not at all. in fact, that's just downright genius. At least temporarily.

Depends, if it is temporary it is smart. If it is permanent, it is stupid.

Certainly no worse than chickenshit amateur welding jobs and muffler tape.
