Side note for remembering what a heavy price was paid by bomber crews, this is the after effect of all the bombs in a B 17 blowing up with all its bombs on board, possibly from a faulty fuse
While the fighter guys got most of glory, the bomber groups did most of the work and got most of the losses. It was common for bomber raids to lose hundreds of men on each mission. It took unbelievable guts to fly those raids week in and week out.
