the Amish and Mennonites don't get drivers licenses, do they?

unless you're operating a motor vehicle on public roads, you don't have to get a drivers license, right?

Sure, the cop is harassing him for something... that's not my point and we'll never know...

I was just suddenly curious after seeing this, about drivers licenses

  1. Most states require rear lights and SMV triangles, could be an issue along that line.

    1. Sure... but I see orange, which I figure is the smv triangle, by the cops left front pocket. Oh wait, rear lights? Huh... I never heard of horse carriages light requirements, ummm, and this is day, so, reflector, I agree and think I see it from here, but there's no brakes, and no brake lights, and heck, I'm way outta my knowledge zone, but do horse carriages even require turn signals?

  2. In PA you don't need a licence to drive a horse drawn vehicle, nor is there an age restriction. You do need 4 way flashers driving at night. Just as a matter of self defence the Lancaster County PA Amish have added headlights, tail lights, reflectors all around, plus the orange triangle. Since low draw LEDs arrived some have added lots of lights, probably the ones who have been hit in the past.
In the manual it says if you have an accident give your name, address, and licence number. That's an error, probably copied from the motor vehicle book.

By the way, that's a state cop in the picture.

  3. NY state trooper. look in the lower left of picture that's a NY registration sticker. A lot of amish have moved to the Mohawk valley in recent years and I am curious why he stopped him.

  4. Yes NY, also Maine, and Delaware. I can only address the what's happening with marking and operation of buggies by observation in PA by observation.
My old boss went freshwater fishing down in Delaware, and there was a boat trailer with no tow vehicle parked near the ramp. The horses that towed it the were tied up in the woods next to the parking lot. The Amish guys had a Bass boat with only a trolling motor.

  5. Possible something as simple as rolling through a stop sign, even bicycles are "supposed" to stop for them.

    1. Whoa, astute observation sir! It might have been something as simple as not getting the full and total stop, and the cop sitting at the intersection waiting for someone, anyone, to give him a reason to write a 400 dollar ticket

  6. The Amish don't have picture ID's.

  7. A guy I work with claims to have been the first officer in Pennsylvania to write a ticket to an Amish carriage without the orange triangle displayed. It must have been around 30 years ago.
