The more you pay for your ticket, the earlier you get to board.
this rewards the frequent flyers, and "Delta One Suites" and "Premium Select" high dollar seats.
FYI, there are twice as many seats on an airline as there is room for carry on luggage.
So, if you aren't getting you luggage tossed in with the "will it make it where I'm going" and you aren't among the first 75 passengers on board, you might find that you're going to be given the choice of sending your carry on to get "checked" into the belly of the beast, or, you can take another flight, and try again.
I recommend you have Fed Ex or UPS deliver your luggage instead. They have a better record of delivering than any airline does, and good luck getting your lost luggage... ever

The Delta Sky Miles credit card has a $95 annual fee. If someone travels a lot, it might be worth that money to get the Zone 1 boarding. It's not worth it to me, though. Most of my air travel is for work, so it's whatever fare the company will pay. I'm taking a trip that week, so my outbound trip will be on the old policy, and the return will be on the new one.
