The Auto Archaeologist states that the original design called for one 2 inch stripe: 70 Road Runners had a hood stripe option that was "1, 2" stripe on either side of the center stripe". It was done as "12" stripes on either side of the center stripe, that was the center divider"
1 2 inch.
But that was seen as 12 inch stripe... and that's why some 1970 Road Runners look they way they do.
So I asked him, and that was his answer. The only road runner I've ever seen with a 12 inch stripe on the hood is Fred's
But Auto Archaeologist gave an example of which Road Runner hood design he meant, and the top green RR is which decal he meant.
Now, I know Auto Arch knows his stuff, but, I think he made a mistake here, because that example, http://www.hotrod.com/articles/mopp-0106-1970-plymouth-road-runner-440/ Doesn't have a 12 inch stripe on it anywhere
