This vacation town and a couple others on the East side of the island kept cars illegal from 1900 to 1907. Even the state supreme court was paid off to keep cars off the public roads.
Those families and others, some of whom were ridiculously wealthy from oil and gasoline, banned the automobile from town. They wasted 40,000 dollars trying to keep the ban. Even ticketed the town dr who used a car to do housecalls on the sick.
