Race rules dictate that cars can only be repaired by pit crews in the pit. All on-course repairs have to be made by the driver or co-driver, which sometimes necessitates extreme measures. This also takes drivers for hire out of the contention, and puts builders of the beasts in a better position to win, they know their machine. Drivers, pretty faces, and blank check racers? Not going to be able to fix the broken stuff to keep themselves in the race
the racing is done in the first 5 and a 1/2 minutes, the rest is just podium
