Went to see the Checkpoint Charlie museum in Berlin a while back, displaying the numerous ways people try to get illegally across borders. Would you believe that on several occasions a BMW Isetta was used, in the (correct) belief that the border guards would never think there'd be room to hide a passenger?
That is nuts! Interesting historical context, and similarity to this post's content, wow, I didn't anticipate that smuggling people across a border would get any comment at all, but you surprised me! I bet the subject of smuggling across a border would make a damn good documentary! It didn't occur to me, but you raise the perfect complimentary location, the East/West Germany border. Thanks!
