not only did this railroad accident victim invent an artificial limb, and patent it, but he used a interesting speed wheel variation on his steering wheel

from http://tywkiwdbi.blogspot.com/2012/05/judge-quentin-corley.html is what I first thought was a flip up speedwheel steering wheel... but it isn't.  The interesting part of the photo is instead, the man behind the wheel, Quentin Corley, Sr. (January 21, 1884 - April 22, 1980) was a Texas circuit judge. On September 18, 1905 in Utica, New York he was in a railroad accident and lost both hands and one arm and shoulder. Within two years he invented and patented an artificial limb.
