Surprisingly in slippery, muddy and sandy conditions,it is the larger diameter of the tire,ie.the footprint and getting down to bottom that gives most grip(traction) as opposed to trying to get huge HP to ground on a drag strip where lots of surface contact in width and diameter come into play. This was particularly evidenced in older, low powered off road/4WD vehicles,or All roaders like the Model T.
