in the circled area above, in the area known as Glen Park
at the western end, is a sign stating "Trucks Not Advised"

above, looks like a quiant little alleyway, right? Nope. It's an actual city street. I call this, most perfect look for the city's commerce dept. We'll see that this view only happens from the main roads on either end of what seems to be an alleyway, Poppy Lane.
But wait, there's more.
doesn't look quite as cute in this other version from some other time Google street view went out. We'll call this real world San Francisco
anyway, like I was saying, a real dirt road, that is a city street
But when you get to the midway point... it looks like it was a brick road for about the first 50 feet.
or turn around and look back up it
above, back to Chamber of Commerce view... looks very nice from Diamond St
Above, historic view, and then that ugly little road was nicely bricked over
and on the east side of Diamond Street
and who ever lives up that brick road, had it covered in the nicest bricks, only to their home.... at the top of this short hill, and there you have the nicest brick road in San Francisco, which goes on for a mile or more past the top of that hill, all undeveloped and ungraded road, literally looking like a country field now, someone planted a LOT of grass up there recently.
AH HA! History feature on google street view DID go up that...
above, after the grass, below, before the nice landscaping and grass installation
back in 2011. Yes, this house has the biggest effing yard in San Fran. And ALLLLLLLLL of Poppy Lane to itself. No shit. Here is the rest of Poppy Lane
Then back to the grass for a current view
a few more bricks, then it's a two rut dirt road with no homes on the left (uphill)
and back to 2011
And this is the East end of Poppy Lane. Back in 2011 the google street view driver was up for adventure... and dedicated to the job. They went ALLLL the way to the end of the city street.
Turning around and looking West, there is a piece of really old pavement on Poppy Lane
....................................................................................................................................
and Ohlone Way... the top (North) end looking downhill (South)
and looking North from the South end
and below, Penny Lane
So there you have 3 of San Francisco's dirt roads. Google didn't try Penny Lane either. All 3 in Glen Park
You still have to use some discernment when using GPS. I spend a good 30+ hours on the road a week and typically use two different GPS systems when I'm going somewhere unfamiliar. In SC we have the opposite problem of what you're talking about. The development is moving so quickly that Google & Garmin are struggling to keep up, AND they've mapped out a lot of dirt roads out in the country that are well travelled by the locals. Day before yesterday I was up in McClellanville on a call to assist a deputy coroner and google sent me down a dirt road that had been burrowed through a grove of trees-all the way I'm saying to myself 'oh hell no, this is not a street,' as I imagined having to back my full sized Chevy van out of this tree maze in the dark. But sure enough there was a street sign, and there was the house (er... shack) I was trying to find.
