Oh damn... that's gotta be frustrating. I was a used car lot mechanic, and a factory assembly mechanic a couple times, but never had to deal with new cars. I have ripped a couple old cars apart and put them back together, and I can say that they were pretty well done in 1969, I think due to the fact that enthusiasts were working at the manufacturing plant, and designed the cars to be fixed at the track. Certainly Duntov and Hoover, and the Ramchargers were all factory racer engineers. Since no one is a factory racer anymore, and it's all about computer crap in new cars, I think that is all finished as to designing for home repair. What sort of engineering do you do? Design, naval, train, aeronautic, mechanical, civil, structural?
As an engineer who has to figure out how to manufacture things designed by Automotive Engineers, I wholeheartedly agree.
