    Andy Granitelli's book "They Call Me Mr. 500" has some good stories about him and his brother delivering 40 ft. trailers built in Chicago to California for this reason. Single axle, towed with a 37 Ford, brother had a Merc. raced there and back, 90 mph. Good stuff.
