A dealership in Leon Valley Texas had 180 wheels from 39 Chevy Silverados and 6 Camaros stolen, all the vehicles were left on blocks. This is the 3rd Texas dealership to get hit. Wouldn't you think the Chevy Dealership Association would spread the warning?

For some reason the dealership decides to call that 180 wheels to be a value of $300,000...

5 guys took 5 hours, between midnight and 5 am to pull all those wheels, and put them in a 24 foot moving van.

They hit Brown Chevrolet in Devine and Womack Chevrolet in Castroville last year.

  1. Why do you dispute the dealer's claim of the value of the wheels? Factory rims when you order them as replacements can be anywhere from $300 each and up....tires are at least $100 bucks each. They are valuing a rim/tire combo at $1666 each, which may be a bit high, but it is not far off the mark. I worked in GM Parts for over 20 years. Replacement parts are always higher than the "option" price when buying a new vehicle.

    1. 1666 seems reasonable to you? for each? That is about 6700 per vehicle, and not only is that easily twice the cost, that isn't replacement cost to a dealership either.

    2. hang on, are you saying each vehicle, is 1666? Or each tire and rim... ?

    3. I just checked, the parts dept woman (30 years on the job) says 700 for a tire and rim..., ballpark, not wasting time to look up part numbers etc.

  2. True enough, but even at dealer cost a $700 rim is still about $400 bucks. A $250 tire is still 150 or so. It may not be reasonable in your opinion, but rims and tires for those trucks and the Camaros are not 50 bucks each even at dealer cost.

  3. http://www.chevrolet.com/camaro-sports-car/accessories.html An MSRP list price for Camaro rims is $500 each. Dealer cost would still be $300 or so. Tires list for $297, cost would be somewhere around $200 maybe. Four rims is 1200, four tires 800, plus the wheel nuts and the center caps. Installation and mounting on top of that, plus labor. Even a dealership has to pay it's own labor. $1666 per vehicle is not an unreasonable estimate.

  4. Nothing personal, I enjoy your blog. I just think you are underestimating the cost to the dealership. I've worked at many dealers in the past. One dealer I worked at was hit 3 times. It's a more common occurrence than you would expect, and a major pain in the neck to the dealer. Because each car has to put back to it's original options. And ordering that many rims puts a strain on the distribution system, and can run into backorder problems. Tires would have to be ordered from the manufacturer, not all the trucks would have the same brand or size on them. Even if by some chance, the trucks are equipped the same way, that's 156 tires. Most tire dealers or tire manufacturer's would not have that many of one size or brand in stock. It's a major problem. Meanwhile, those vehicles cannot be sold until the wheels and tires are reinstalled. Which means the dealer's inventory is tied up and they are losing money.

    1. well keep enjoying, Just because we estimate the cost differently on tires and rims isn't a sign of anything. Ignore what I pontificate if it's not eye to eye with your opinion, neither one of us will lose a nights sleep over it. Anyway, back to the tires, it's the fault of the dealership for not hiring a security guard at 15 an hour, all night long, to keep things from getting stolen. Or putting car alarms, lot perimeter and motions detector alarms, or hiring a security aptrol company to keep an eye on things. All of which would be less costly than replacing these rims, no matter whose estimated value we work with. And knowing that 2 other dealerships were hit in Texas previously this year? Felony stupid.
