Other than a hole in the hump you can pass a basket ball through, is that a look at a shield, a blanket, the garage floor? I don't know.
It appears to be what's left of a composite flywheel shield. (see the fiber strands) These hit the market during my time drag racing. I had one on my tube-chassis '68 Nova. It amazed me that they were SFI approved as required by NHRA.
Someone hole-sawed the bellhousing for cooling the convertor, as can be seen by the chuck of now worthless aluminum.

thanks ol eagle eyes! Looks like the hole wasn't a problem, by the size of the hole int he door that something went OUT it...
