The end of production of the American Mercedes was not due to any fault of the car - production ended because the Long Island, NY factory burnt down in a fire.
Jesse, It was probably cheaper to import the cars into the United States than build them. Also, the US Merceces was an exact replica of the German-built cars, so there was no unique features that made American assembly a major selling point.
