What's the explanation of the horizontal grill bars on this jeep?

  4. That's not a Jeep, it is a M151 quarter ton utility truck. It is the vehicle that replaced the Jeep in military usage from around 1960 thru the 80's, when it was replaced by the HMMWV series. The M151 could be dangerous if the driver didn't pay attention; instead of the Jeep's solid axles front and rear, the M151 had fully independent suspension with swing axles at the rear. These would tend to tuck under if cornering too fast (just like a first gen Corvair), and the vehicle could roll over. Eventually the military put a roll cage and seat belts in the M151, as you might imagine this made getting in and out while wearing field gear somewhat of a challenge.

  5. Its actually a Ford M151, not a Jeep. Hence the horizontal bars and not the classic vertical Jeep ones.

  6. Wouldn't have known this a couple days ago, but BAT posted an Alfa Romeo AR51 4x4, which has a similar horizontal slat grill.

Since that wasn't it though, I looked into it more and it seems this is in fact a Ford-designed MUTT, for Military Utility Tactical Truck. Made in the 1950's as a government contract, the horizontal slats were simply to avoid any trademark issues with Jeep.

  9. It's not a Jeep, it's a Mutt. M151 used in Korea and Viet Nam. I think Ford built them but I'm not sure.

    1. I don't recall seeing any other comments when I posted. Some kind of delay or software glitch maybe?

    2. Sorry to say the comments are something I switched from automatically posting, to having to review every one. So they only get posted after I've read them, deleted the repeats from the same commentor, deleted the spams, the advertising wizards who think mentioning their website or business in my comment area is useful, etc. I only get to check the comments out after work, and it's rare for so many people to reply! Normally, a call for help or advice gets one or two replies. This one was well known to everyone but me!
