I brought my first type 2 at 17 - and i still drive one daily now, ten years later! This is pretty much exactly the same as the conversation between me and my dad - except being in the UK my roadtrip was around western Europe and I busked rather than do oddjobs. Luckily my dad trained as an engineer and was so taken with my first VW he bought his own type 2.. He has had the engine in and out of my busses more times than I can count!
