I've got Angels in the Outfield on tv while I browse for things to post... and they used this old GMC for the Angels team bus

pretty darn good cast of actors, Danny Glover being a curmudgeon of a grumpy team manager... Joseph Gordon Levitt as the baseball loving orphan that can see ghosts, Tony Danza as a pitcher with a worn out arm, the wonderful Christopher Lloyd as the boss angel, Neal McDonough - who you will recognize as the blond with bright blue eyes that plays Dum Dum Dugan in Capt America, and Matthew McConaughey and Adrien Brody as team players - with a real short role for Dermot Mulroney. I was surprised to see Taylor Negron, who was a familiar sight in SO many 80s and 90s movies

the Apr 22, 1967 Oak Lawn (Illinois) tornado claimed 33 lives and destroyed the bus yard of Suburban Transit System

OAK LAWN, IL -- By the time an EF-4 tornado tore down Southwest Highway in Oak Lawn on April 21, 1967, ten tornadoes would strike northeastern Illinois on what would be the worst tornado outbreak in state history.

Chicagoland residents were already hearing grim reports out of Belvidere, where an EF-4 tornado struck at 3:50 p.m., killing 24 people, 13 of them children who were boarding buses at Belvidere High School. An hour or so later, another EF-4 tornado slammed Lake Zurich, destroying 75 homes, an elementary school and damaging hundreds more structures. One person died.

But the worst of the swarm was yet to come. The precise moment the tornado hit the epicenter at 95th Street and Southwest Highway was 5:32 p.m., as recorded on a stopped clock inside Oak Lawn Community High School. Although the funnel cloud had touched down for only a few seconds, the largest death toll occurred at the intersection. Eighteen lives would be lost. Three people died at Fairway Super Mart, one at Sherwood Restaurant, three at Shoot’s Lynwood Tavern, two at the Suburban Bus terminal garage, and nine in cars waiting at a red light in heavy Friday afternoon traffic.

Walter Sobut owned Fairway Super Mart with his brother, John, at 5951 W. 95th St. The afternoon of April 21, 1967, Walter had been collecting carts from the parking lot when cars began flying across Southwest Highway and down the street. Walter ran back into the store and told his cashiers to take cover. He grabbed onto the cart pole inside the store and hung on for dear life. The wind spun him around.

“He said he prayed to God that instead of breaking his back to take his life,” his daughter later said. “It was the second time he cheated death. He was the last guy off the U.S.S. Arizona in Pearl Harbor.” (Sailor Lauren Bruner was the second-to-last person)

Fairway’s roof fell in when the walls collapsed, killing three shoppers inside the store: Charles McNeill, along with 30-year-old Joan Casey and her 18-month-old daughter Christine. All lived in Oak Lawn.

“The roof on that place was humongous,” Rita recalled.

She said the customers’ deaths haunted her father until the day he died in 1996.

Kenworth’s fairly extensive bus manufacturing history has been forgotten, but buses were part of its portfolio from its beginning as the Gerlinger Motors Co. in 1912, and at one point were its most profitable product line.

The Model T was built from 1949 to 1957.

The engine was the sturdy International-Harvester “Red Diamond” – a 450 cu. in. version for the 35 footer and a 503 cu. in. one for the longer model.

While smaller and less powerful than the Hall-Scott 590 and 779 cu. in. engines used in Crown school buses, they were no doubt more fuel efficient.

Shifting was through a Spicer 5-speed manual.

A 2,000-year-old coin was unknowingly used as bus fare in England

The relic was collected in the 1950s by a Leeds City Transport employee named James Edwards, who tallied fares from bus and tram drivers at the end of each day and counted them.

Edwards would set aside coins that couldn't be cashed — including foreign or counterfeit currency — and take them home.

He gave the ancient coin to his grandson, Peter, who stored it in a wooden chest.

Now 77, Peter Edwards recently revisited the coin and researched its origins.

how does a bus, on a track, at a governed constant speed, unable to turn or speed up, kill 3 people between 2015 and 2021?

That's nearly a train.... so how did 3 people get hit by it? And die?

The govt says it was a lack of fences.

I can use logic, and figure out that if a fence would prevent people from stepping in front of a bus, then the bus and the fence were not at fault, people jumping in front of a bus were unable to prevent themselves from stepping in front of it.

thanks to Kim for sharing his review of a artist's book that is not likely to get distributed in the USA. 'The Fantastic Bus' winner of the Nordic Council Literature Prize, and adapted into a sold out play!

In 2024, the author and illustrator Jakob Strid was awarded the Nordic Council's Children's and Youth Literature Prize for his book 'The Amazing Bus'. It took him fifteen years to write and draw the book. He tells both poetically and seriously about how a group of different animals, from small turtles to lions and rhinos, set out together to find the magical land of Balanka.

The little bear Taku tells about how the gallery of characters in the story builds an enormous, four-story high, 10-wheeled bus. The prime mover behind the project is the cat Spir, whose green fur is due to the fact that he once fell into a barrel of radioactive slime...

An equally important main character is the bus itself, which in addition to its many piston engines has jet turbines and wings. It is all drawn technically quite correctly, which makes the illustrations extra enjoyable for car enthusiasts to study in more detail. It is clear that the author has spent a lot of time looking at and understanding the technology of trucks before putting pen to paper.

The animals' goal in building the imaginative vehicle is to find a flower that can save the sick Timo's life. This results in a trip through wild landscapes, across desolate plains, along a bridge over the North Pole and on to the other side of the world. The experiences along the way range from technical challenges to a meeting with the gods, to flashbacks about how they once tried to fly to Balanka in airships.

The book from the publisher Gyldendal is a small work of art, and can be read with equal pleasure by both children and adults. It is worth every penny.

The Fantastic Bus even put on a sold out show at the Royal Theatre of Copenhagen!

Experience Jakob Martin Strid’s grand masterpiece in a new musical and poetic production for children, as The Fantastic Bus takes over the Main Stage at the Royal Danish Playhouse.

Life in Ahnstarr City is not easy for Taku, Spir, and their friends. Their small wooden houses by the harbor are being torn down, and little Timo is seriously ill.
Only the rare saffron lily, which grows in the dreamland of Balanka, can cure him.
When two old Phantom-8 jet engines from a failed expedition 25 years ago are rediscovered, and a plasma generator is brought back to life, Spir has an idea: let’s build a bus and travel to Balanka!

the new Fantastic Four movie has a cool variety of vehicles in the scenery, and a great recreation of the comic book Thing lifting a VW Bug

Notice the little green round thing in the far left above

A bus called Swordfish? Is this an easter egg for the Jackman/Berry/Travolta?Cheadle movie where the helicopter picks up the bus and flies it across the city?

What the heck is this little blue car? Gotta be Eastern European or a Hollywood creation

and here's that little green round thing again, which was featured at Comic Con!  https://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2025/07/great-little-hollywood-prop-car-in.html
