David Pearson drove a radio-heater-delete WO-series A990 ’65 Coronet HEMI racecar on the Shell 4000 Trans-Canada Rally. (thanks George!)
It had a non-shielded 13-gallon fuel tank from a Dodge Lancer was installed in front of the trunk-mounted battery.
The blueprinted 426 race HEMI was detuned with 10.25-to-1 pistons and a milder camshaft, topped off with a single Holley four-barrel.

In 1960, Camoradi was able to acquire two “competition optioned Corvettes plus spare parts, technical advice as needed and a financial testing contract” with a little help from Corvette engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov.
Delivered with 283-cubic-inch/290-hp fuel-injected engines, heavy-duty brakes and suspension, and larger fuel tanks.
The Corvettes started their racing career off right, with one cruising to an overall win at the Gran Premio de la Habana, then following up three days later with a GT class win at the Gran Premio de la Cuba finale.

this 1969 GTO Judge Ram Air V special order factory drag racer was found in a police impound in 2005... with only 54 miles on the odo. Because the internet and cell phones weren't around then, it sold for only $4600.00
After several talks with Pontiac experts, he found out the car was a dealer race car. The nephew of the Pontiac dealership’s owner had ordered the vehicle specifically for drag racing, then had it delivered to Leader Automotive in Troy, Michigan, for some fine-tuning wizardry, a speed shop owned by John DeLorean's brother
On top of the Ram Air IV motor, the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 automatic, and the Safe-T-Track rear end with 4.33 gears, a ‘Special Equipment’ box was also checked out on the order form. That meant no radio, sound deadener, or seam sealer – all in the name of weight saving.

the only remaining member of the Smothers Brothers Racing Team, NHRA Stock Eliminator class, was returned to the Oldsmobile dealership following the inaugural Gatornationals in 1970, repainted, and sold off like a random car without incredible drag racing history
King Oldsmobile repainted it yellow and sold it off.
It sat hidden for decades until Jeff Kane discovered it. Kane brought the car home and immediately started researching and gathering parts and getting an understanding of what it was going to take to put this car back to its original as-raced condition.

the dual qual 427 lightweight '63.5 Galaxie
Along with the new profile, Ford offered a lightweight package intended for racing that featured a stripped interior and a host of custom-built body and trim panels.
The hood, fenders, decklid, and fender liners were molded in fiberglass.
The bumpers and bumper mounting brackets were aluminum rather than steel.
The case for the T10 four-speed transmission and its bellhousing were also aluminum, and it used a lighter chassis than run-of-the-mill Galaxies. The diet shed several hundred pounds from the car, making the dual-quad 427 V-8 even more impressive.

1st I've ever heard of the term, the "135 cars," a term for the first 50 Cobra Jets, the factory drag-racing cars built to introduce the new 428 Cobra Jet V8 to the public. The cars could run in the 13s on street tires, and 11s were only a set of slicks and traction bars away.
There are Cobra Jets and then there are Super Cobra Jets. Supreme among CJs, however, are the factory-built drag racing Cobra Jets. In late 1968, Ford built 50, from VIN 135007 through 135056. Due to the common first three digits, enthusiasts refer to these fastbacks as the 135 series.
Vinny was turning wrenches at Rye Ford when a transport parked itself outside of the garage bays with a brand new, shiny Mustang in tow. Since he doubled as the driver for the dealership’s drag racing program, he and colleague Benny Kaufman prepared the car with a three-point roll bar, traction bars, a scatter shield, and revised rear-end gearing.
Vinny Lyon had the right of first refusal on the factory dragster, and purchased it from Rye Ford in April 1969 for $3,605 (a little over $31,000 in today’s dollars). It came complete with drag slicks, an open exhaust, and a two-year warranty. It ran a best of 11.2 @ 118 mph in the Super Stock E class.

Fifty-five years later, Vinny still owns the car. No one has owned one longer
this one was bought by a collector, and only had 200 miles on it when he died around 2008, and his cousin had to deal with the estate as executor
It is one of the six lightweight Cobra Jet racers sent to Russ Davis Ford.
Only two of those six were sound-deadener-delete with no undercoating, this CJ and the Gas Ronda racer.
A decal on the car puts it at the March '69 Fuel Gas Championship at Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, and the '69 Springnationals.

a1966 Mr. Norm's Dodge Coronet left the factory with the 426 max wedge, it's the only 66 Coronet factory made with a max wedge
It's still unclear why Chrysler decided to use the discontinued Wedge in a 1966 Dodge, but Jim speculates it's because the company needed to show NASCAR they would be ready for the said season with a 426-cubic-inch powerplant. Chrysler was having difficulties rolling out the HEMI. However, the latter arrived on time, so Mopar scrapped the plan-B Wedge option.
Noted Mopar expert Galen V. Govier also documented the car's authenticity as a 1966 Wedge. According to him, only three vehicles were special-ordered with the 426 Street Wedge. However, this 1966 Coronet is the only one known to exist. It's also the only unit with extensive documentation from all previous owners.
The previous owner also successfully linked the car to Grand Spaulding Dodge, the iconic performance-oriented dealership that sold the sought-after "Mr. Norm's" vehicles. The vehicle's data card has been recovered, confirming that it shipped to that dealership.
More proof comes from an ad Mr. Norm ran at the time. The print said, "Would you believe? Brand-new '66 Coronet 2-dr Street Ram" with "full factory equipment." The ad confirms the engine wasn't a swamp performed by Mr. Norm Kraus. It seems he was also surprised Dodge fitted a 426 Wedge in a 1966-model-year car.
It wasn't commissioned by the dealership, either. Dodge simply chose to send it to Mr. Norm because they thought he was the only man who could sell such a car. Furthermore, according to Mr. Wicker, the numbers stamped in the core support, rear bumper support, and broadcast sheet "all match and coincide with each other."
The second owner replaced the hood, painted the car purple, and named it "Gentle Ben," bringing it to the condition it was discovered in decades later. He also made several mods to the body and under the hood. The Coronet changed a couple more owners before it ended up in storage in the mid-to-late 1970s. It then went into a storage box, where it remained for decades.
The Coronet was unearthed in 2012. Its fifth owner noticed the discrepancies between the VIN and the fender tag and sold it, thinking it had a misprinted VIN. The sixth owner, who showcased the car in 2023, discovered the broadcast sheet under the rear seat and did the initial research toward unveiling its special-order 426 Wedge status.
After touring it at various events through 2023, the sixth owner sold the 1966 Coronet to Jim, who completed the documentation process.

I don't know how much fun a person can have with an old race car, unless they have unlimited money, and unlimited access to a nearby race track... but cool old race cars come up for sale a lot, because they pay off huge to the sellers, who in some cases are the original race teams, who have no use for something that has appreciated in value significantly

1 of 42 R code 1964 Mercs, 1 of 9 Parklane 2-Door fastbacks built (3 known to exist). Parnelli drove one of these to 7 wins in USAC
someone spent 3 years restoring this, and only made about 100k at auction... so, they earned about 14 an hour after the cost of parts and outsourcing some work to shops.
Ain't that a kick in the head?
