“Jumpin’ Jim” at age 37 getting ready for Operation Market Garden. He would eventually become a three star general and the Commanding General of the 82nd.

He got his nickname as the only American general officer to make four combat jumps during the war.

  1. If the General jumped in Vietnam he was with the 173 Air born. In 1965, the Brigade became the first major unit of the United States Army to serve in Vietnam. They conducted the only combat parachute jump of the war in February 1967. My Platoon Sergeant made that jump. He later came to the helicopter company and crewwd for me. He was with me on the day that we were shot to pieces. He pased away a little over a year ago. His name is Tom Callahan and I miss him every day

    1. Jumping Jim was in WW2. That's nuts that there was only ONE combat parachute jump in Nam!
