S&K Towing in the process of shutting down its operations, because it got greedy, and violated the law preventing tow truck companies from selling or disposing of active duty military member's vehicles

According to the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA), tow companies are required to obtain a court order before selling or disposing of a vehicle owned by an SCRA-protected servicemember.

In May 2024, a Military Legal Assistance attorney contacted S&K Towing and explained that the company was violating the SCRA. In response, a manager at S&K Towing told the attorney, "We do this all the time."

Between August 2020 and April 2025, S&K Towing Inc illegally sold or disposed of nearly 150 vehicles, many of which were registered to Camp Pendleton addresses. In other cases, vehicles were auctioned even after they were told that the owner was in the military.

S&K Towing will pay $160,000 to servicemembers who were affected by the illegal towing and auctioning of their vehicles.

"This settlement sends a strong message that all towing companies must recognize servicemembers' rights and take the necessary steps to comply with the SCRA," Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division said in a news release.

it's either lazy, or stupid, to leave your tow truck company info on the tow truck you abandon on a mountain

the source of these photos, at the link, had this to say:

"Called Milo’s out of Silver Plume offered him a recovery price and he declined and said that he was going to leave it in the woods. So decided to go up get vehicle information and pictures. With some phone calls to Clear Creek PD and Forest service the next couple days he decided to text me that I ratted him out. "

Milo’s is allegedly going to cut it up where it sits and pull it out.. How the forest service is going to allow an open flame torch on the side of a dry mountain is crazy to me. He has had a year and a half to do it and has drug his feet long enough.

the Hassan Brothers, tow truck company owners, were busted for defrauding workers’ compensation insurers of nearly $6 million in premiums.

The scheme involved underreporting payroll by over $13 million and using "shell companies" to hide employee wages and avoid tax withholdings.

a California Department of Insurance investigation revealed they reported only $3 million in payroll when the actual figure was over $16.7 million.

Mark Hassan, who operated numerous towing businesses across Los Angeles—including Hadley Tow, Courtesy Tow, and California Coach Towing—held active contracts with several Southern California law enforcement agencies at the time of his arrest.

Don Lee did everything with style, even his tow truck

But since few of you will click through to read the good stuff, and I want you to know it, here:

Don Lee had been a bicycle shop owner who became a protégé of Los Angeles pioneer businessman Earle C. Anthony, purchased his Los Angeles radio station KHJ from Los Angeles Times publisher Harry Chandler in 1927.

Don was the exclusive west coast distributor of Cadillac automobiles in the early 20th century. In 1919 Don purchased the Earl Automobile Works of Hollywood, California.

Harley Earl, the son of the company's owner, was kept on as manager. Renamed Don Lee Coach and Body Works, the company produced many custom designed Cadillacs for the rich and famous. Harley Earl left the company to become the head of General Motors styling department in 1927

Having amassed a fortune selling automobiles, Lee branched out in broadcasting in 1926, purchased or built 12 radio stations, creating his own network, and having such a power base he put his transmitters and antennas on a hill in Griffin Park Los Angeles... now became known as "Mount Lee.".. .just above the Hollywood sign.

Don bought a 20-acre site on a mountain top at the eastern boundary of Griffith Park, widening the transmission field equipment to take in new thousands of homes in the Hollywood hills and the San Fernando Valley. The site is one and a half times higher than the top floor of the Empire State Building in New York. Mount Lee is thus the highest television location in the world. (Info circa 1937)

Part of Mount Lee was sold to Howard Hughes, who intended to erect an estate for his then current love interest, Ginger Rogers

Frank Kurtis got started working with automotive fabrication when he was hired by Willet Brown and Tommy Lee to rework Don Lee Racing Team's midget car bodies.

unbelievable French junkyard find... 65 Dodge Power Wagon tow truck, that with very little effort, is up and running... a handcrafted wrecker, certified by the French vehicle registration authorities. This truck combines the robustness of a Dodge WC 51 chassis (1944 Ambulance S7MA51) with the aesthetics of a Citroën U23 cab (1954).

This seems to have been simply abandoned one day, for no reason... everything works.

HA! at about 10:40, he discovers the Mopar left hand threaded lugs on the drivers side (for safety) and nearly snaps one off before trying it backwards

And of course, change your Youtube play speed to 1.5 or more

I remember posting something else this guy fixed up, I'm certain it was a very cool tractor, but it's been a while. He is very good, and does not talk during the videos he makes.

there were only 5 illegal and predatory towing companies in Clackamas County Oregon... not that anyone in the county govt, with a job to keep that from happening, was alert enough to stop before it got out of hand. So, it got really out of hand

The operation resulted in three people being arrested for operating an illegal towing business, two tow trucks being towed, including one impounded, one driver being cited for not having a driver’s license, expired vehicle registration, and failing to register a vehicle, five illegal towing operations identified and referred for civil penalties/enforcement, and 19 commercial vehicle safety violations found during three inspections.

All of the businesses identified in the operation had already received formal warning letters from the State Board of Towing, advising them that they were out of compliance and subject to criminal prosecution.
