GM Aerotrain
After Electro-Motive's "Aerotrain" concept failed to reinvigorate passenger rail travel, partly due to the train's poor design, the Rock Island acquired both trainsets for use in commuter service. Originally, #1 went to the Pennsylvania while #2 tested on the New York Central. Seen here is #2 arriving at Chicago's Englewood Union Station on April 21, 1965. Today, sections of both sets survive; #2 resides at the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin while the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis has #1.
