a search for airworthy Douglas DC-3s to photograph has grown into a worldwide research project, aviation photographer Rene Ligon has documented nearly 600 surviving airframes


Ligon has now documented 657 surviving airframes, as of August 22, 2026. 

To make the information manageable, he maintains two principal lists: one for aircraft that are airworthy or close to airworthy, and another for static examples. 

The flying category also includes aircraft capable of taxiing and those being restored to airworthy condition.

    My son just saw a DC-3 flying over the Arkansas River a few days ago.. Not sure where he was going. The last one I flew on was out of Jackson, Tennessee to Nashville, Tennessee where I flew on a DC-7 to Fort Dix, New Jersey on my way back to Vietnam. Nothing better then a radial engine at night to entertain you.
