The National Transportation Safety Board wants a new technology called intelligent speed assistance installed in every new U.S. car to prevent speeding, instead of installing breathalyzers to prevent drunk driving, or intensive (world class) drivers license education

It’s been met by auto manufacturers with little enthusiasm, and the recommendation has not yet been adopted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“There are lots of things we can tweak that make crashes less likely and lethal, but one of the most powerful things we can do is slow cars,” said Isabella Chu, associate director of the data core at the Stanford Center for Population Health Sciences.

“Nagging people to abide by speeding laws only works once in a while,” he said. “A more natural place to focus is on car design.”

Zipper said there’s no reason for anyone to travel more than 20 mph over the speed limit on any road, and the dangers associated with that kind of speeding are avoidable “if we install this well-known technology.”

Speeding is only implicated in about 1/3rd of road deaths

  1. This works only if the system knows what the local speed limit is, which means it has to know exactly where you are at all times, which means real time GPS tracking. of your vehicle. No thanks.

  2. If you've got a cell phone they know where you're at, at all times. Guaranteed. I hate it because I'm a guy who loves speeding! (not thru school zones or suburban neighbor hoods) Whether I'm on my motorcycle or in my truck or whatever I find 78 to 85 MPH a good comfort zone. And once in a while i get in an area where i can really cut loose. Especially on my bike
